Local Student Receives Statewide Scholarship
For Immediate Release
May 15, 2012 (Verdigre, Neb.) - Verdigre resident Jenna Rifer was recently awarded a $1000 scholarship from Great Plains Communications.
The Long Distance Scholarship, which is provided annually by Great Plains Communications aims to help students who are looking to pursue their education before returning to their communities. Many rural communities face losing their best and brightest after college in what experts call “rural brain drain”.
Rifer is a member of Verdigre High School’s Class of 2012 and will be attending the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in the fall. Rifer plans to earn her degree in Veterinary Science before pursuing a doctoral degree.
Rifer was very involved with athletic and academic activities during high school. She was a member of the school’s basketball and volleyball teams. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and competed on the school’s quiz bowl team.
The scholarship is part of a larger program aimed at supporting educational efforts in the communities Great Plains Communications serves. The company provides up to $20,000 worth of educational scholarships to students annually. The company's “Commitment to Our Schools” grant program provides $20,000 to schools to provide additional funding for special projects and initiatives.
