E-Mail Scam - Gift Certificate From Applebee's

Some of you may have received an e-mail from a friend which encourages you to forward a message regarding the restaurant, Applebee's. As a reward for forwarding the message to just nine of your friends, Applebee's International will give you a $50 Gift Certificate! Do you recall the old adage, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is?" Well it applies here.

The "Applebee's E-mail Hoax" has been a popular one. So much so that Applebee's International (www.applebees.com) has posted a notice on its home page warning people of the "fraudulent e-mail chain message."

This e-mail is a hoax. Do not forward the e-mail to your friends if you receive it and encourage your friends to do likewise.

The e-mail appears in your inbox as outlined below...

Subject Line: "Gift Certificate from Applebees"

Body of E-mail:

"My name is Bill Palmer, founder of Applebees. In an attempt to get our name out to more people in the rural communities where we are not currently located, we are offering a $50 gift certificate to anyone who forwards this email to 9 of their friends

Just send this email to them and you will receive an email back with a confirmation number to claim your gift certificate.

Sincerely
Bill Palmer
Founder of Applebees

Visit us at:www.applebees.com

Hey guys, DONT DELETE THIS EMAIL. It really works, I tried it and got my Gift certificate confirmation number in 3 minutes."

Again, do NOT waste your time by forwarding this e-mail to your friends. It is an e-mail hoax.

Ask The Help Desk - Weird File Names From Downloads

Question: Sometimes when I download software from the Internet onto my computer and then go back to try to find a particular file at a later date, it can be difficult. Software makers use such weird acronyms or nicknames for their programs. Is there anything I can do to make my search for these archived files easier?

Answer:
Yes. When saving a file onto your computer that you've downloaded from the Internet, you do not have to keep the same name the software company gave to its program. When you click on the download link and the resulting "Save As" box comes up, simply type in a name which is more descriptive or one that you'll be able to remember easily at a later date.

You may already have a bunch of these files with unusual names downloaded onto your computer which you want to keep but wish to rename. (You may not be able to determine what some of these files are until you open them up.) If it's a file you no longer want to keep, simply throw it away by dragging it to the Recycle Bin. To rename these programs, right-click the file you want to rename and select "rename" from the resulting menu. Just make sure not to change the file extension (i.e. ".doc" to ".exe").

Short Tutorial - Impress Your Friends By Showing Them This One!

No doubt if you've surfed the Internet for a while, you've come across a few cool websites that you want to forward on to friends. Rather than copying the URL (web address) and then opening Outlook Express to paste the URL into a new message, Internet Explorer has a quicker method of getting the job done.

When you find a web page that you want to forward to a friend, simply click your cursor arrow on "File" located at the top of your web browser's window. Select "Send" from the resulting drop down menu and then choose "Link by Email" from the resulting submenu. An e-mail message window will immediately open with the corresponding web address automatically pasted into the message pane. As an added bonus, the name of the web page will also be listed in the "Subject" field of your e-mail message. Simply type your friend's e-mail address into the "To" field and click "Send."

For Netscape users, under the "File" menu, drop down to "Send Page." A "Messenger" e-mail window will appear with the link in the body of the message and the title of the web page in the "Subject" line. Once again, just type in the e-mail address of the person you want to send it to and click "Send." Pretty cool, huh?
